Coenzyme Q10 Anti-aging Properties

The quick answer: Yes, Coenzyme Q10 is an effective antiaging ingredient!

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), also known as ubiquinone, has been proven to help prevent and control signs of aging. Applying it topically can help your skin stay youthful and maybe even rewind the clock a little. If you want to know why, keep reading,

CoQ10 is a compound that can be found in plants, bacteria, animals and people because it is something created naturally; our bodies already produce CoQ10. It’s important to note that the amount of CoQ10 our bodies produce decreases as we age, with peak levels of production happening in our 20s. Interestingly, there’s 10 times more CoQ10 in the top layer of our skin (epidermis) than in the deeper layer (dermis).

This nutrient plays very important roles in our well being. It’s a source of energy that our cells use to grow and it serves as an antioxidant. The latter is what gives it its anti-aging properties.

Antioxidants are essential because they protect us from damage caused by free radicals. Free radicals (uncharged molecules floating around in the air) can influence the production of dark spots or wrinkles. So, the way it works is: CoQ10 (antioxidant) neutralizes free radicals (oxidants). Basically, CoQ10 kills the free radicals before they can cause our skin any harm.

Studies have not reported serious side effects related to CoQ10 use. Nevertheless, as always, the only doubt that we should have when it comes to skincare products is if there is a high enough concentration of the nutrient in the product to be effective. And remember, CoQ10 degrades and loses its efficacy when exposed to light and air, so avoid products packaged in jars or see-through bottles!
